Iran Vows Harsh Retaliation After Israeli Strikes Kill Military Leaders, Trigger Drone Barrage
Tensions in the Middle East have surged after Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and assassinated senior military leaders, including Gen. Hossein Salami, Gen. Gholamali Rashid, and nuclear scientists Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi. In a swift response, Iran launched over 100 drones toward Israel. Israel confirmed the attack, stating its air defense systems were intercepting the drones outside its territory. Iraq and Jordan also reported intercepting drones that entered their airspace.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, calling it the most severe strike on Iran since the 1979 revolution. He vowed “severe punishment” and declared that “the end of this story will be written by Iran’s hand.” Tehran accused Israel of terrorism and claimed the attacks deliberately hit residential areas, killing women and children.
Iran’s government also suggested U.S. complicity, referencing Israeli claims that the strike was coordinated with Washington. The U.S. denied involvement, but Iranian officials remain skeptical. The crisis comes amid ongoing nuclear negotiations, with Iran previously engaged in talks with the U.S. and Arab states in Oslo and Oman.
In a defiant tone, Iran reiterated its right to enrich uranium and warned the international community about the consequences of ignoring Israel’s aggressive actions. Iranian diplomats suggested that Israel’s assault may push Tehran to reconsider its nuclear posture, despite past claims of peaceful intentions.
Iran’s ability to respond militarily remains limited due to prior Israeli strikes on its air defenses. However, the country may leverage diplomatic channels and proxy allies across the region. While regional Arab states have expressed sympathy, few are expected to support military action against Israel.
The region now stands on edge as Iran weighs its next move in a conflict that could quickly escalate.
